Nestled in the embrace of untouchable karst queens – Dinara, Svilaja, and Kamešnica – lies the knightly town of Sinj. Nourished by the fertile Sinj field and quenched by the cold clarity of the Cetina River, it has anchored our ancestors to this heavenly climate since prehistoric times. Attractive to barbarians, Romans, Ottomans, and many other conquerors, it has resisted for centuries, defending freedom. A living monument to defense and identity is certainly the Sinjska Alka, a competition protected by UNESCO. Along with the Church of the Miraculous Lady of Sinj, the largest Marian shrine in southern Croatia, it is the most recognizable symbol of this magical oasis in the Dalmatian hinterland.
