Karlovac is a city with 50 000 inhabitants in the centre of Croatia, located close to Zagreb and 100 kilometres from the Adriatic Sea, bordering Slovenija and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Karlovac has very good traffic connections with Zagreb and other major Croatian cities, either by motorways or public transport. Karlovac has an official birthday: 13 July 1579, when it was founded by decree of Charles II Francis of Austria as a defence town against the Ottoman attacks. It was founded as a six-pointed star-shaped fortress, and this historical portion of the city is today protected cultural heritage. It is the city of parks and four rivers: Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica and Dobra, as well as of incredible nature.
