The City of Zagreb is the cultural, scientific, economic and political centre of the country and home to one quarter of Croatia’s total population. To the north, it is bordered by Mount Medvednica, home to various plant and animal species and which serves as the city’s “lungs.” Further south, the banks of the Sava River offer numerous recreational opportunities, including Bundek Park and the Jarun Sports and Recreation Centre, both popular areas for leisure and outdoor activities. Zagreb is the second greenest capital city in Europe, winner of the EU Mission Label for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities.
